About

For me, the clinic, research and community work are not separate things. All of this is part of my path toward a single goal: to enable a person to eat fully, smile, communicate and feel confident throughout their entire life. Returning smiles to people, I want the result to be durable. I also want such care to be available to everyone.

In the clinic I can help people directly, and this is valuable to me – to see the result of my work and assess it one, five, ten years on. In research, I work on the most pressing problems of implant-supported prosthetics – peri-implantitis (inflammation of the tissues around an implant that leads to its loss) and the imperfection of alloys for dental implants (insufficient biocompatibility and suboptimal mechanical properties). We also look to the future and create the new – combining the fundamental properties of light, chemistry and materials physics, structuring them at the macro-, micro- and nano-level, examining their semiconductor properties, using plasmon physics and quantum effects, embedding function through structure. All of this is incredibly fascinating, and every answer we obtain gives rise to many new questions and opens just as many new possibilities. Exploring the world is a captivating journey.

Community work within the ITI, where I head the Russian Section, is an opportunity to share knowledge with colleagues and learn from them through national congresses and study club meetings (more than a hundred are held each year). It is helping young doctors choose the right books, passing on the principles of scientific knowledge and evidence-based medicine. For them it is a clinical school, a scientific school. It is also the chance to realize one's small role in big medicine and the great responsibility in the life of a particular patient. And it is the cultivation of medical and scientific humility, critical thinking and the habit of constant work on oneself.

Maxim Mishnev

Clinic. Graduated from the First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg in 2002; completed internship (1 year) and residency (2 years) there, at the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and Materials Science with a course in adult orthodontics, while working as a prosthodontist. Medical practice – 24 years. Since 2010, when the clinic opened – leading prosthodontist of My Medical Center (at that time – SOGAZ International Medical Center), where he works to this day.

Research. Candidate of Medical Sciences (2023). In 2024 he was invited to establish and head a specialized research institute – the Research Institute of Implantation Prosthetics named after N.N. Znamensky; since the institute's registration – CEO and Leading Researcher. Areas of work: development of an implant system, biocompatible titanium alloys and theranostic coatings. Holds 6 patents and 3 computer program certificates.

Community. ITI Fellow (since 2018), Chair of the ITI Section Russia (since 2023). More than 600 section members and 27 study clubs – continuing education, clinical standards and experience exchange that make treatment outcomes predictable not for a single clinician, but for the profession as a whole.

About the institute’s name

Nikolay Nikolaevich Znamensky (1856–1915) was a privat-docent of the medical faculty of Moscow University and the founder of dental implantology in Russia. In 1890 he performed the first experiment on artificial tooth implantation in the country; in 1891 he scientifically described the technique of bone bed formation and was the first to trace the pathomorphosis of tissues during implantation; author of the fundamental work “Implantation of Artificial Teeth”. The name of the institute perpetuates his contribution to establishing dental implantology as an independent scientific discipline.

Current research

Implant system

A result of the institute’s work: a dental implantation system covering the full cycle – from implant design to surgical instrumentation and placement protocol (more than 500 components). The solutions are protected by patents RU 235131 U1, RU 2849245 C1 and RU 2850970 C1.

Titanium alloys

Development of a series of new-generation biocompatible titanium alloys to replace outdated alloys containing toxic elements; R&D is under way on 4 projects.

Bioactive surfaces

Creation of new biologically active implant surfaces with a nano-level hierarchical structure. The institute’s current project is a plasmon-active Au–TiO2 coating (a theranostic “diagnosis – treatment – monitoring” cycle): SERS detection of pathogen biomarkers and eradication of pathogens without device removal (photodynamic and photothermal action); the solutions are protected by patents RU 2864643 C1 and RU 2855985 C1 (2026).

Clinical research: prosthetic planning for elderly patients following the “reasonable radicality” approach, and biomechanics – finite element modelling of loads jointly with engineers of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and Stanford University.
